Robbie is ready for his new home - this gorgeous boy is currently enjoying pet life in his foster home shared with other 3 dogs, but is keen to find his own place with his own family. He is house-trained, walks well on-lead & enjoys regular, short daily walks, and of course, comfort and affection. He would benefit from the company of another dog, but this would not be necessary in a home where he was part of the family and enjoyed lots of human companionship. NSW Muzzling Law Amendment On 26th October, 2011 NSW Local Government Minister, Don Page, announced a new program which will allow pet greyhounds in NSW to become muzzle free.

Under the Greenhounds program, greyhound owners can apply to have their pets exempt from the muzzling laws stated in the NSW Companion Animals Act. This comes in line with the 'green collar' programs currently run in other states. Friends of the Hound have been pushing for many years to have pet greyhounds freed from this archaic and discriminatory requirement in which the onus had been completely removed from 'responsible ownership'. Friends of the Hound were involved in the consultative process for this muzzling exemption program in NSW and believe that it seems to be a more positive, broader-based system than that of the other states, allowing rehoming groups to apply to become an official greyhound retraining program, and suitably qualified people to apply to become authorised greyhound assessors. However Friends of the Hound stil have major concerns about the testing protocol to be used for these assessments (GAPNTT) as this rather limiting, shelter-based test has apparently created significantly high 'failure' rates and increased mortality rates in other states over the past few years. We shall see how this new program rolls out and hope that it provides a positive impact on adoption rates and a reduction in the amount of Greyhounds destroyed when no longer required by the racing industry. Friends of the Hound will be applying to become an approved greyhound retraining program, and will provide updates about Greenhounds and how our adoptees can arrange for their hounds to enjoy a muzzle-free existence. Friends of the Hound Inc. is a greyhound rescue and rehoming organisation, dedicated to the welfare of greyhounds. Our objectives are to rehome greyhounds as family pets and companions to suitable permanent homes and raise awareness about the breed. Friends of the Hound Inc. works with greyhound owners, breeders and trainers from all over NSW and SE QLD to help rehome their dogs. Why do we exist?? The sad, ugly fact is that there is a mass wastage of greyhounds due to the dog racing industry. This, despite being refuted or simply ignored by some racing supporters, is simply the truth. The extremely limited number of greyhound adoption agencies in Australia can not possibly cope with the large volume of dogs being routinely discarded - it is impossible to rehome the masses of greyhounds out there that become surplus to racing industry requirements. It is THE QUICK OR THE DEAD for these dogs as thousands are destroyed each year. Friends of the Hound is not an activist group but a group who is actively trying to help as many of these dogs as possible. Our group is made up of passionate dog-lovers that feel strongly about the welfare issues surrounding these dogs, and also other animal welfare issues surrounding the ethical treatment of animals. Many of our wonderful members, volunteers and supporters, expend lots of time, energy and effort in helping to rehome Greyhounds, and they do also have other personal agendas. Friends of the Hound are providing a contact service where we put people in touch with each other who would like to help with providing a home for a greyhound while their owners are away or if you are looking for a home to place your greyhound in. WE NEED YOUR HELP ! Friends of the Hound need to transport our rescued and fostered greyhounds over considerable distances - from the North Coast of NSW to the Sunshine Coast QLD, and distances between (ie. Tweed - Gold Coast - Brisbane - Sunshine Coast - Bundaberg - sometimes even Central Coast NSW to Tweed Coast NSW). We are in need of people travelling up and down the coast or between these regions who are willing to take a greyhound on their trip. Our Co-ordinators can meet at prominent points along the motorway or highway for easy pick-up and drop-off. If at any time you are travelling between any of these regions and feel you are able to help with transporting one of our lovely greyhounds, please contact us on the numbers below or send us an email enquiries@friendsofthehound.org.au Lisa - 0416 194 864 (Gold Coast/Tweed) Katrina - 0423 840 448 (Sunshine Coast) This assistance will greatly benefit our rescue and rehoming efforts and be very much appreciated. Please note that Greyhounds are excellent car travellers and generally lay down for the trip. Friends of the Hound Inc. also require other hands-on volunteers to help us continue our successful Greyhound rescue and rehoming efforts. If you can spare a few hours a week and would like to offer your services to help in a particular role - please contact us.
